Tigers pay back Foxes, remain unbeaten at 4-0

The Conway High football team made a major statement Friday night at The Backyard, avenging a tough loss to Hartsville last season with an impressive 35-21 victory over the visiting Red Foxes.

The No. 5-ranked Tigers (4-0) withstood a hard charge by Hartsville (3-1, No. 2 in Class 4A) to pull away in the second half. After scolring the first 21 points of the game, Conway saw Hartsville star Tryon Evans score three TDs and a 2-point conversion to tie it up at 21-all in the third quarter.

But the Tigers responded with a touchdown drive of their own, capped by Tate Finley’s 3-yard TD run to put Conway on top for good. Following the Tigers’ defense third fourth-down stop of the game, Finkley put the finishing touches on the win with a 1-yard dive.

Conway rushed out early on a pair of D’Wuan Grainger touchdown passes – one to Pooh Brantley for a 48-yard score and the next one to Juwon Moody from 22 yards out for a 14-0 lead. Conway’s first fourth-down stand set up Antonio Long’s 3-yard TD run to make it 21-0.

But Hartsville’s Evans caught fire midway through the game, catching a 71-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to 21-7 at halftime. A Grainger interception set up Evans’ first rushing TD, and his 22-yard TD run and 2-point dash knotted the score at 21-all.

That’s when the Tigers answered the call by controlling the game from that point on. Conway now gets a bye week before facing Myrtle Beach on Sept. 21.
