Tigers back in playoffs after Goose Creek’s DQ upheld

It’s official: The Conway High football team is back in the Class 4A, Division II playoffs after the SCHSL refused to reverse its decision to disqualify Goose Creek on Wednesday.

The No. 16-seeded Tigers (5-6), who suffered a 48-7 loss to the No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Gators last Friday, will travel to No. 9-seeded Bluffton (11-1) for the second round of the playoffs on Friday night.

The Conway players, most of whom had turned in their equipment and attended basketball or wrestling practice Monday, were re-issued gear to return to practice on Tuesday after the SCHSL announced the disqualification.

The move came as a result of the Gators using an ineligible player. Goose Creek claimed the player in question did not participate in any games this season, according to a report on WBCD-TV in Charleston.

According to the report, the player, who was not identified by name, is a fifth-year student who was allowed to suit up for the team as an “honorary member” but did not participate in a game for the Gators.

According to the report, the SCHSL has provisions for such players to dress out with the squad but it requires the school to fill out special paperwork. Goose Creek claims it did not know about the provision. The SCHSL contended the ineligible player did participate in a game.

The reprieve could help the Tigers if the extra rest allows star quarterback Mykal Moody to return to the lineup. The senior missed Conway’s final two games due to a thigh bruise but may be able to play Friday.
