Tigers in Chick-fil-A Bowl; Gamecocks go to Outback

Palmetto State pigskin fans are in for a feast this bowl season – chicken on New Year’s Eve and steak on New Year’s Day.

Clemson (10-2) will face LSU (10-2) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31, followed by the Gamecocks (10-2) taking on Michigan (8-4) in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1.

South Carolina makes its fourth trip to the Outback Bowl. The Gamecocks are 2-1 in previous appearances with a 24-7 win over Ohio State in 2001 as well as a 31-28 victory over the Buckeyes in 2002. In the program’s last appearance, Carolina fell to Iowa 31-10 in 2009.

“Four years ago when we went down there, we had a 7-5 record and had just been clobbered by Clemson. We were sort of in disarray,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “At that time, 7-5 got us in the Outback Bowl. We stunk it up and didn’t play well. Hopefully, we’re a different team. I feel we’re a completely different team than we were four years ago.”

Clemson will be trying to erase the memories of four straight losses to the Gamecocks and last year’s defensive no-show in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers face a tough task in an LSU team that was ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation this season.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 1996 Chick-fil-A Bowl, a game also played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.  LSU won that game 10-7. The first meeting was played in New Orleans on Jan. 1, 1959 when No. 1-ranked LSU defeated Clemson 7-0 to win the national championship.

“Our coaches, our players and our fans always look forward to playing against the best programs in the nation and LSU certainly fits that description,” said Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney.  “We are going to have the opportunity to compete against a top 10 team that played for it all last year.”

Tickets applications for boosters are currently being accepted. The general public will have an opportunity to purchase any remaining tickets in the future.
