hot_entryThe VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Men’s Basketball Championship continues today with quarterfinal action beginning at 12:00pm.  All four games will be carried on ESPN3 for the first time.  Tickets are still available for the event at the HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.

#1N HIGH POINT PANTHERS (16-13) vs. #4S WINTHROP EAGLES (18-12, 10-6), 12:00pm • WATCH: ESPN3
This is the fifth meeting between High Point and Winthrop in the Big South Tournament and first since 2008.  The Eagles own a 4-0 advantage over the Panthers in the postseason — 1-0 in the Quarterfinals, 2-0 in the Semifinals and 1-0 in the Finals … This is the first time that HPU is the higher seeded team when facing Winthrop in the Conference tourney.

The Panthers are looking to advance to the Semifinals for the first time since 2011 (second under head coach SCOTT CHERRY) and eighth time overall.  HPU has lost its last two Conference Tournament games … The Eagles are looking to advance to the Semifinals for the first time since 2012 and 17th time overall.  Winthrop’s 37 all-time Big South Tournament wins are a League record.

This is the 10th meeting between UNC Asheville and Radford in the Big South Tournament, but the first since 2009 (won by the Highlanders).  Asheville leads the all-time postseason series, 5-4.  This is the third meeting in the Quarterfinals, with Asheville holding a 2-1 advantage … The Bulldogs are looking to reach the Semifinals for first time since 2012 and 18th time overall.  Asheville head coach NICK McDEVITT has appeared in the Semifinals 11 times during his 17 years with the Bulldog program as a player (3 – 1997-01) and assistant (8 – 2001-13) … Radford is looking to reach the Semifinals for the first time since 2010 and 18th time overall.

This is the ninth meeting between Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern in the Big South Tournament, but the first since 2006.  The Buccaneers lead the all-time postseason series, 6-2.  Seven of the previous eight meetings have occurred in the Quarterfinals … Charleston Southern is looking to advance to the Semifinals for the third consecutive year and fourth time under head coach BARCLAY RADEBAUGH.  The last time the Bucs made three consecutive Semifinal appearances was in 1999, 2000 and 2001 … Coastal Carolina is looking to secure its first Semifinal appearance since 2011 and 10th overall.  The Chanticleers have reached the Semifinals two previous times under head coach CLIFF ELLIS (2010, 2011) … Ellis is sixth all-time in Big South history with 131 victories, while Radebaugh is eighth with 120.

This is the first meeting between VMI and Gardner-Webb in the Big South Tournament.  The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 0-2 against the Conference’s Virginia schools in the postseason … The teams played an epic four overtime classic on Feb. 5, won by VMI 108-104 at Gardner-Webb.  In that game, GWU’s TYRELL NELSON tied the Big South single-game record with 25 rebounds.

VMI is looking to secure its fourth consecutive Semifinal appearance and sixth in the last eight seasons … Head coach DUGGAR BAUCOM is 9-7 all-time in the Big South Tournament … VMI seniors D.J. COVINGTON (1,353 points) and RODNEY GLASGOW (1,315) are the sixth-highest 1,000-point scoring tandem in Big South history with a combined 2,668 points … Covington is eight rebounds away from becoming the 27th player in League history with 700 career boards, while Glasgow is nine assists away from becoming the 13th Big South player with 500 in a career.

Gardner-Webb is 2-4 all-time in the Big South Tournament since joining the League in 2008-09, and is looking to reach the Semifinals for the second-straight year.  Sophomore JEROME HILL had a First Round record 16 rebounds on Wednesday.
