Track & Field: Strand trio strikes silver at state meet

No gold medals made their way from Saturday’s SCHSL Class 4A/5A Track and Field Championships in Columbia to the Grand Strand, but three local female athletes claimed the next best thing in silver.

Socastee reigning state champ Brianna Young settled for second this time in the Class 5A discus throw with a distance of 136 feet, 1 inch. In Class 4A, North Myrtle Beach’s Emily Barbosa finished second in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet even, and St. James’ Ka’Mauri Humes made a late charge to place runner-up in the 200 meters in a school-record time of 25.10 seconds. She also took fourth in the 100 meters in a school-record time of 12.26.

St. James had the most success among local squads with five other athletes placing in the top eight to earn all-state recognition. The Lady Sharks finished an area-best 16th as a team, with sophomore Denver Caton and freshman Anna Stoddard scoring points in the pole vault. Each had best jumps of 8-6 to finish sixth and eighth overall, respectively.

The St. James boys saw junior Christopher Anderson place fifth in the pole vault with a school-record jump of 12-0, and junior Jayson Brady placed fifth place in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:35.14. Sophomore Kyle Bailey finished sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.59.

North Myrtle Beach also had some shining moments as freshman Jenna Downey took seventh in the 800 meters (2:33:72) and Shania Parker placed eighth in shot put (30-6). For the boys, Marcelous Livingston finished sixth in the shot put (44-09), and the Chiefs placed seventh in the 4×800 relay (8:20.34).

Myrtle Beach’s Chris Brown collected the only points for the Seahawks by finishing third in the discus (141-00).

In Class 5A boys, senior Kenney Solomon had a disappointing day by being disqualified from the 100 meters for a false start. He finished seventh in the 200 meters (21.98) to cap his high school career.
Teammate Bricen Nguyen placed eighth in the 400 hurdles (1:02.10), and Carolina Forest’s Bryce Crawford placed eighth in the shot put (47-03).
