Undefeated Coastal holds steady atop FCS polls

ccufoot-dAfter a 5-0 start for the third consecutive season, the Coastal Carolina football team remained the FCS Coaches top-ranked team for the fifth consecutive week, while holding the #2 spot in the STATS FCS Top 25 for the fourth straight week.

The Chanticleers are coming off a 55-0 Homecoming victory versus Alabama A&M this past Saturday. It was Coastal’s first shutout versus an FCS opponent, its first since Chowan in 2007 (a span of 97 games) and its third overall shutout in program’s history.

Also in the win, two Chanticleers set Big South records.

First, De’Angelo Henderson scored CCU’s first three touchdowns, one rushing and two receiving. He has scored at least one TD in a Big South record 19 consecutive games, which is one shy of the NCAA FCS record. Henderson, who has scored a total of 30 TDs over his 19-game span, only played the first half versus Alabama A&M and gained 102 yards on the ground (7.3 avg.) while hauling in four passes for 46 yards. Henderson ranks second in the FCS in rushing TDs (7), second in rushing yards (534), third in scoring (10.8 ppg), fourth in rushing yards per game (126.8 ypg) and fifth in all-purpose yards (179.60 ypg).

Second, Alex Ross threw four touchdown passes – all in the first half – to mark the second time in his career he has accomplished the feat. Also, it marked the 10th time in his career that Ross has thrown at least three TDs in one game to become the Big South’s all-time leader in the category. Ross leads the Big South in seven offensive categories, while ranking among the FCS leaders in completion percentage (4th; .714), passing efficiency (13th; 159.0), passing TDs (14th; 10), points responsible for (19th; 70), passing yards (23rd, 1,041), yards per pass attempt (25th; 7.83) and points responsible for per game (25th; 14.4 ppg).

In the Coaches poll, the top three spots remained the same. Coastal held the top spot for the fifth consecutive week after receiving 16 first-place votes and 633 points, followed by North Dakota State (six first-place votes and 622 points) and Jacksonville State (four first-place votes and 601 points). CCU opponents appearing in the Coaches poll include #15 Liberty, Charleston Southern (26th), Furman (30th) and Western Illinois (35th).

Coastal Carolina picked up three more first place votes (39 total) in this week’s STATS FCS Top 25 and remained the #2 in the national media poll for the fourth consecutive week. Jacksonville State received 89 first-place votes to stay atop the STATS FCS Top 25. North Dakota State is third (20 first-place votes), followed by #4 Illinois State (one first-place vote) and #5 James Madison (eight first-place votes). Liberty moved up three spots to 15th while the following CCU opponents were among those receiving votes: Western Illinois (30th), Furman (32nd), Charleston Southern (36th) and South Carolina State (42nd).

Coastal Carolina will conclude its four-game home stand and begin Big South play this weekend by hosting Presbyterian College. Kickoff is set for 2 pm and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
