Volleyball Roundup: Chiefs, Seahawks remain unbeaten

The school year is barely a month old but there is already a big Grand Strand showdown brewing on the volleyball court.

The Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach High volleyball teams remain undefeated on the season and will meet Tuesday, Sept. 27, on the Lady Chiefs’ home court. The winner will sit in the driver’s seat for the Region VIII-AAA crown, and win bragging rights along a 30-mile stretch of the beach.

“North Myrtle Beach lost a lot of good players, three seniors that are now playing college volleyball on scholarship,” Myrtle Beach coach Larry Couch said of the defending region champions. “But they still have a lot of good players. It’s going to be a great match.”

Church’s Lady Seahawks improved to 8-0 on Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep of St. James (25-18, 25-12, 25-11). Amy Wiggins, Meagan Miller and Shelby Sheets combined for 32 kills to down the Lady Sharks. The Lady Chiefs remained a perfect 7-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over Wilson (25-4, 25-4, 25-14).

There’s no guarantee of an unbeaten matchup since both teams have tough tests ahead. North Myrtle Beach has a pair of road games at West Brunswick (N.C.) on Wednesday and St. James on Thursday, while Myrtle Beach welcomes Georgetown on Thursday and hits the bus for the difficult Tournament of Champions weekend at Dorman.

“They’ve got a lot of great teams in that tournament,” said Church, rattling off a laundry list of state champions and power programs to compete in the meet. “We’re going to find out exactly how good we are.”

And if the Lady Seahawks pass that test, a border rivalry with the Lady Chiefs awaits. And the winner will have the early edge in not only a region title, but maybe even a state championship.

South Florence 3, Conway 2

The Lady Tigers  lost a five-set heartbreaker to South Florence, playing four nailbiting sets before falling in the tiebreaker, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10. Sara Allen, who had seven kills for Conway.

Socastee 3, Georgetown 0

The Lady Braves improved to 5-2 on the season by defeating the Lady Bulldogs.  Karly Klimas had 20 service points, seven of which were aces, and Ashley Arnold had nine kills to lead Socastee.
