USC slips past Lady Tigers in battle of ranked tennis teams

The 26th-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team upended 17th-ranked Clemson (7-3), 4-3, on Wednesday at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia.

The win snapped Clemson’s five-match winning streak over the Gamecocks (5-1). Clemson now holds a 24-23 all-time lead in the series.

It was the second match Clemson has lost this season when winning the doubles point. The Tigers had won 25 in a row when taking the doubles point before the last two matches.

Clemson won the doubles point, winning matches at flights two and three after dropping and 8-1 decision at flight one. Nelly Ciolkowski and Romy Kölzer won, 8-6 at two doubles, while Klara Vyskocilova and Monika Kochanova improved to 14-2 this year with a 9-8 win at flight three, fighting off a 5-3 deficit earlier in the match.

Wong took her first singles loss of the 2012 season, falling to 11-1, as 29th-ranked Anya Morgina won, 6-4, 6-1 in Wong’s first match at flight one. Josefin Andersson then downed Monika Kochanova, 6-0, 6-2 to give South Carolina a 2-1 lead, with four matches ready to head to a third set.

Katerina Popova ousted No. 82 Klara Vyskocilova, 6-0, 2-6, 6-0, at flight four to give the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead, and No. 59 Jaklin Alawi held on in the third set after dropping the first set to Beatrice Gumulya at two. Alawi won, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the match, which clinched the decision.

Clemson received wins at three and five singles, from Nelly Ciolkowski and Romy Kölzer, respectively, who each won in a third set. Ciolkowski is now 14-5 overall, while Kölzer improved to 10-1 in her freshman season.
