Vanderbilt, Virginia advance to College World Series final

cws-vandyThe College World Series trophy will return to the East Coast for the first time in three years after the SEC’s Vanderbilt and the ACC’s Virginia advanced to the finals with a pair of dramatic wins Saturday in Omaha.

Vandy third baseman Tyler Campbell drove in right fielder Rhett Wiseman with the winning run in the 10th inning Saturday as Vanderbilt beat Texas 4-3 and advanced to the final.

The Commodores will face Virginia in a best-of-three series starting Monday after the Cavaliers beat Mississippi 4-1 on Saturday. The SEC had won three CWS titles in a row (LSU in 2009 and South Carolina 2010-11) before the Pac 10’s Arizona State and UCLA won the championship the past two seasons. The ACC hasn’t won the CWS since Wake Forest in 1955 (Miami won in 1999 and 2001 , before joining the ACC).

In the 10th inning, Vanderbilt loaded the bases when Wiseman singled and stole second base, pinch hitter Ro Coleman walked and catcher Karl Ellison was hit by a pitch. Campbell then drove in Wiseman with an infield single. Wiseman was one of five Vanderbilt players with two hits. He and center fielder John Norwood each drove in a run.

Carson Fulmer and Hayden Stone split the pitching duties for the Commodores. Fulmer gave up four hits, six walks and two runs in 4 1/3 innings. Stone went the rest of the way, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight.

The Cavs’ reserve catcher Robbie Coman shook off the nerves after a rough second inning and helped send Virginia to unchartered territory.

Coman atoned for his passed ball that led to a second-inning run by getting two hits, including a go-ahead two-run single in the fourth inning, and Virginia defeated Mississippi 4-1 in the College World Series on Saturday to advance to the championship round.
