Victory Bell tolls for Tigers in big win over Seahawks

confoot-victorybellConway High senior running back Jah’Maine Martin started it, and sophomore backup Daiquawn Clark finished it. In between, the Tigers turned in a valiant effort to capture the Victory Bell for the first time since 2011 with a 25-22 victory over rival Myrtle Beach on Friday night in The Backyard.

The Tigers (5-1) continued their turnaround season in impressive fashion to bring the coveted trophy back to Conway. The Seahawks had won seven of the last eight meetings but saw their offense get shut down in the second half for the second straight week.

Conway took control early on the legs of Martin, who broke free for an 18-yard TD on his first carry. Following a fumble by Myrtle Beach, Martin busted a 35-yard TD on his second touch to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead in the opening minutes.

But the Seahawks quickly answered with a 15-yard TD pass from Drayton Arnold to Keyonte Sessions and a 60-yard TD burst by Brandon Sinclair from the Wild Hawk formation for a 14-13 edge. It was Myrtle Beach’s first and last lead of the game.

Martin completed the hat trick with a 3-yard TD run in the second quarter for a 19-14 lead, but he was injured just before halftime and did not return. Clark came in to relieve him but both defenses shut down the ground games until midway through the fourth period.

Conway quarterback Peyton Derrick threw a strike to Juwon Moody for a 24-yard TD pass and a 25-14 edge. The Seahawks responded with a touchdown drive that was capped by Arnold’s 20-yard TD throw to Will Vereen and 2-point toss to Cortez Brown with 4:30 left to pull within a field goal.

But the Conway offensive line cleared the way for Clark, who picked up a pair of first downs on the final drive to ice the win for the Tigers. Conway has already won more games than it did in the past two seasons while Myrtle Beach suffered its second straight loss to a county rival.

Conway has a bye week next Friday while the Seahawks open region play by hosting Wilson.
