Volleyball: MB wins tourney title; Panthers reach semis

mbvolley-teamThe Myrtle Beach High Volleyball team captured the championship of the 15-team gold division at the Ashley Ridge Invitational on Saturday.

After a strong showing in pool play, the Lady Seahawks swept Conway High in two sets in the semifinals to make it to the championship match against host James Island. The Lady Seahawks dropped the first set before coming back to win the next two and clinch the title.

Myrtle Beach was led at the net by Gracie Davis, Cassie Runyan and Darby Sheets with multiple kills. On the back row, Lexie Watts led the team in digs and Danni Hix in assists.

* Carolina Forest turned in a strong showing at the Sumter Invitational, going 7-1 in pool play with wins over Wilson Hall (2-0), Orangeburg-Wilkinson (2-0), Central (2-0) and a split with River Bluff (1-1).

The Panthers earned the No. 4 seed as they entered tournament play, defeating West Florence 2-0 and Wilson Hall 2-0 for the second time that day.

The Panthers faced River Bluff again in the semifinals. It was a hard-fought match but in the end River Bluff defeated the Panthers (1-2). Alexis Tomlin made the All-Tournament Team for helping to lead her team through the day.

* North Myrtle Beach lost two hard-fought matches against North Carolina powers Charlotte Hough and Hoggard from Wilmington on Saturday.

Charlotte Hough won 3-1 by scores of 25-13, 18-25, 25-22, and 25-15). Maggie Hash led the Lady Chiefs with 14 kills and Sydney Bellamy added six. Maddie Roy had 19 assist and Raegan Matney had 13.

Hoggard also won 3-1 by scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-13, and 25-15. Hash led the Lady Chiefs with 11 kills and Matney had 11 service points.

The Chiefs got a rematch with Hoggard at home Monday but saw similar results. The Chiefs won the first set 30-28 followed by a 27-25 loss in the second set. Hoggard then took the momentum and finished the final two sets 25-19, and 25-18.

“Hoggard is a very good team and we gave them a great match. This will certainly help us get better going into region play (Tuesday),” said coach Alex Sing.

Maggie Hash led the Chiefs with 17 kills. Sydney Bellamy had 12 kills and Maddie Roy had a season high 26 assists.
