Volleyball: Chiefs rebound; Sharks, Tigers win in fifth

nmbvol-doubleblockAfter dropping two late season matches to Region 7-4A champion Myrtle Beach and Region 6-5A winner Carolina Forest, the North Myrtle Beach volleyball team took out its frustrations on an unsuspecting Chapin squad in the first round of the SCHSL playoffs.

The Lady Chiefs swept the Class 4A playoff opener 3-0, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-18, and 25-16. It was the Lady Chiefs’ first win since the first week of the month due to Hurricane Matthew and a tough closing schedule.

Maggie Hash led the Lady Chiefs’ attack with 14 kills, Kayla Henley had nine kills and Sydney Bellamy added seven kills. Maddie Roy had 21 assists and Raegan Matney had 12.

North Myrtle will play the winner of the Lakewood-Hilton Head matchup next Tuesday in the second round.

* Carolina Forest 3, Spring Valley 0: The Lady Panthers swept visiting Spring Valley in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs by scores of 25-20, 25-9, and 25-12.

Leading the Lady Panthers were Meghan DeVaux with 15 service points and 13 digs and Alexis Tomlin with 11 kills and 16 digs. Carolina Forest will host the second round Tuesday at 6 p.m.

* Myrtle Beach 3, Dreher 0: The Lady Seahawks (26-2-1) blew past visiting Dreher in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Myrtle Beach was led at the net by Gracie Davis with 12 kills, Cassie Runyan with nine kills, and Darby Sheets with five kills. Danni Hix had 17 assists, Natalie Benkandil made nine assists, and Lexie Watts had 11 digs.

* St. James 3, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 2: The Lady Sharks scored a hard-fought road victory via a fifth-set tiebreaker to advance to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

* Conway 3, West Ashley 2: The Lady Tigers scored a home playoff win for the first time in school history in dramatic fashion, defeating the Lady Wildcats in a fifth-set tiebreaker. Conway travels to the winner of the Ashley Ridge-River Bluff match.

* Summerville 3, Socastee 1: The Lady Braves’ season came to an end in a road match at the Lady Green Wave.
