Volleyball Wrapup: CA bids farewell to four key seniors

cambvolley-seniorsThe Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach volleyball team bid farewell to four seniors on Tuesday night – a foursome that will be remembered as the class that put the program on the map.

CA’s Rebekah Bowers, Amelia Antonucci, Claudia Markley and Mags Grafe played their final regular season match at the new gym where the team’s accomplishment hang on the walls. It’s a far cry from the church gymnasium/cafeteria where they used to play.

But the school’s move to a new building and the arrival of coach Alex Sing signaled the ascent of the program to the level of state power. The Lady Saints advanced to the 2012 SCISA Class A title game before returning last year to capture the state championship.

The Lady Saints (13-3 overall, 6-0 region) completed their third straight season without a region loss with a 3-0 sweep of Pee Dee Academy. They won by scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-23, led by the seniors who were honored before the game and applauded upon their exit.

Bowers made her last home match a good one with 16 kills, and Claudia Markley led the team with 22 assists. Mags Grafe, who transferred to CA this year, had seven aces and four solo blocks, Claudia Markley had 22 assists in the win over Pee Dee Academy.

The Lady Saints next travel to Florence Christian on Thursday to determine the region championship. The Lady Saints beat Florence Christian earlier at home and a sweep will give the Saints another region title before beginning their state title defense.

* Myrtle Beach 3, Lake City 0: The Lady Seahawks (7-3 overall, 7-0 region) swept the Lady Panthers by scores of 25-13, 25-8, and 25-13 to remain undefeated in region play.

Myrtle Beach was led by Gracie Davis with 11 kills, Emily Wunder with seven aces, and Lauren Dimauro with five aces. The Lady Seahawks host St. James on Thursday.

* Socastee 3, West Florence 0: The Lady Braves won in straight sets over the visiting Lady Knights.

Dale Rogers and Eden Dukes led the attack with 18 and 11 kills, respectively, and Katelynn Hine added  27 assists. Megan Faris had three solo blocks, five aces and two kills, and Cassandra Colon anchored the defense with six digs.

The Lady Braves face Sumter on Thursday.

* North Myrtle Beach 3, Georgetown 0: The Lady Chiefs swept their region match over the Lady Bulldogs in straight sets, 25-4, 25-10, 25-6.
