Volleyball Wrapup: MB tops NMB for region tourney title

mbvolley-11The Region 7-3A volleyball tournament ended just as it should have – with a hard-fought showdown between regular-season co-champions Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach in the title match.

Less than a week after being swept by the Lady Chiefs on their home court to split the regular-season series, the Lady Seahawks turned the tables on host North Myrtle Beach for a 3-1 win in the rubber match for all the marbles. They will carry the No. 1 seed into next week’s state tournament.

Myrtle Beach jumped out to led 13-5 lead in the opener but had to survive a comeback bid that saw the Lady Chiefs close the gap to 19-18 behind Maddie Roy’s seven straight points. A net violation on North Myrtle Beach that would have tightened the score instead put Myrtle Beach ahead 24-21 and they closed out the first set 25-21.

In Game 2, Myrtle Beach eighth-grader outside hitter Gracie Davis, the Region 7-3A Player of the Year, tallied seven of her 24 kills in the finale to spearhead the 25-14 win. The Lady Chiefs staved off elimination with an impressive 25-13 win in game 3, but the Lady Seahawks battled to a 25-21 in the fourth set to settle the season tiebreaker with North Myrtle Beach.

In addition to her 24 kills, Davis added six aces. Maggie Slabinski had 12 Kills, Danni Hix had 31 assists, Ally Bills added 14 assists and Darby Sheets had five aces. North Myrtle Beach was led by Maggie Hash’s 12 kills and Jana Berry’s eight kills.

The two teams, which finished the region slate at 9-1 after splitting their meetings, advanced to the final by winning their best-of-three semifinals. Myrtle Beach swept Lake City 2-0 while North Myrtle Beach took a 2-1 victory over St. James.

The four semifinalists advance to the Class 3A playoffs, which get under way next week. Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach will host first-round games to be announced, while St. James and Lake City will play on the road.

Lady Saints earn top seed

* The Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach volleyball team drew the No. 1 seed in the Lower State for the SCISA 2A state tournament, which gets under way Friday.
