UPDATE: Winter storm puts region schedule in logjam

mbhoops-20 (2)The weather isn’t the only thing that’s been on ice lately. So has the Myrtle Beach High boys and girls basketball teams’ celebration of their seemingly inevitable Region 7-3A championships.

The postponement of Tuesday night’s home game against Georgetown and Thursday’s showdown with rival North Myrtle Beach to Friday and Saturday, respectively, have created an even bigger backlog of region games before the playoffs get under way next week.

The South Carolina High School League announced Tuesday that the Class 3A playoffs will be pushed back two days, giving regions time to settle their seedings without sending an exhausted team into the first round.

That still could be the case for the Myrtle Beach boys. It took them all season to climb to the top of the Class 3A boys basketball rankings. Now the No. 1 Seahawks will have to put in a workmanlike effort if they hope to hold that spot entering the postseason.

Myrtle Beach can clinch a share of the region crown if it defeats Georgetown on Friday. But a loss to the Chiefs would likely force a tiebreaker rematch with NMB for the No. 1 seed. A potential playoff game would likely be held next Monday.

The Lady Seahawks, who suffered their first region loss on Monday to Wilson, have a less difficult path to the region title. A win over NMB or Georgetown, or a loss by Wilson, allows the Lady Seahawks to clinch the top seed.

Socastee and NMB, which will meet on Friday night, are battling for playoff positioning, as are Region 6-4A rivals Conway and Carolina Forest. The Panthers cancelled Tuesday night’s non-region game against West Ashley and are scheduled to host the Tigers in a rematch of their earlier overtime contest on Friday.
