Week 1 Previews & Picks: Panthers catch early break

The Carolina Forest football team got its first break of the season even before it started when Friday’s season opener was switched to a home game against Lower Richland.

With the Diamond Aces’ stadium renovations incomplete for the season kickoff, the Panthers were spared the 5-hour round-trip bus ride – at least until next year’s meeting.

Carolina Forest can parlay the venue change into a much-needed confidence boost if the Panthers can defeat the Diamond Aces in their debut. … Carolina Forest 24, L-R 21.

* Hanahan at Myrtle Beach: The No. 4-ranked Seahawks officially launch the Luke Doty era as the junior QB and South Carolina commit takes over as the full-time starter.

Despite a false MaxPreps report that said Hanahan beat Myrtle Beach 54-51 last week, the Seahawks will flip the script in the real matchup. … Myrtle Beach 34, Hanahan 13.

* Loris at North Myrtle Beach: Both teams claimed wins over Class 5A in Week 0 to get the season started on the right foot, but this rivalry is big even if they were 0-1.

The hold a huge advantage in the all-time series, 35-12, but the Chiefs haven’t lost a home game since the 2015 season. They get their 15th straight home win and bragging rights. … NMB 27, Loris 13.

* Conway at Nation Ford: The Tigers are licking their wounds following last week’s heart-breaking loss to North Myrtle Beach in the final seconds of their home opener.

Nation Ford is also coming off a tough loss as both teams try to avoid 0-2 starts. The Tigers get back on track in this one. … Conway 28, Nation Ford 20.

* Socastee at North Brunswick (NC): The Braves blew a two-touchdown lead in last week’s loss at West Brunswick. They get better results in their home opener against another state-border foe. … Socastee 34, North Brunswick 23.

* St. James at Hilton Head: The Sharks face another tough road test to open the 2018 campaign. Look for them to continue to improve as the season progresses. … Hilton Head 28, St. James 14.

* Christian Academy of MB at Williamsburg Academy: The young Saints head to Kingstree to take on the struggling Stallions. … CAMB 35, WA 14.

Last week 2-1; Overall 2-1
