Week 1 Previews & Picks: Tigers kick off 3-day feast

confoot-10pbuFootball fans are in for a three-day pigskin feast this week thanks to the Derrick Law Firm Carolina Kickoff Clash. Five games featuring schools from north and south of the state border battle for bragging rights, including three involving Grand Strand teams.

Conway kicks things off Thursday night against South Brunswick as the Tigers try to run their record to 2-0 and match their win totals from each of the last two season while the calendar still reads August.

Conway struggled for three quarters before unleashing the deep ball en route to a 22-13 win at Georgetown. If Peyton Derrick can hook up with star wideouts Bryan Edwards and Juwon Moody a bit earlier this time, this one could get out of hand. … Conway 34, South Brunswick 13.

* Socastee vs. New Hanover: The Braves had a hard time holding on to the ball and finding the end zone in last week’s 25-13 loss to West Brunswick. Meanwhile, New HanoverĀ  nearly hung half-a-hundred on Hoke County. Socastee’s offense and defense will have to step up their games to win this one. … New Hanover 27, Socastee 23.

* Myrtle Beach vs. Charlotte Christian: The top-ranked Seahawks start the season and close the Kickoff Clash on Saturday night against a tough defense that posted a shutout in last week’s 5-0 win (yes, in football, not baseball), but the Eagles haven’t faced a potent offense like the Seahawks will throw at them. … Myrtle Beach 31, Charlotte Christian 14.

* Fort Dorchester at Carolina Forest: The Panthers played like a new team in last Friday’s 31-6 season opening win over Darlington, but the jury is still out about the Falcons. The Patriots present a more proven opponent after crushing South Florence 64-40 (again, in football, not basketball) last week. The Panthers’ defense will be tested and the offense will have to control the ball and the clock to win this one. … Fort Dorchester 41, Carolina Forest 35.

* Andrews at St. James: The Sharks showed some true grit in getting past Loris last week 23-20, and they hope to keep the momentum rolling against Andrews. The Yellow Jackets shut out Waccamaw last week in a 14-0 slugfest in the rain. St. James hopes the confidence it gained in the opener spills over on the field tonight in what is sure to be another physical test. … St. James 16, Andrews 14.

* North Myrtle Beach at Loris: Both teams are coming off disappointing openers but the Chiefs have the comfort of knowing they lost to a team fans affectionately call Dillon University. If coach Blair Hardin can get his young team to erase the 54-14 defeat and approach Loris like it’s a new season, the Chiefs should prevail. … North Myrtle Beach 24, Loris 13.

* Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach vs. Dillon Christian: The Saints take advantage of Socastee’s trip to the Carolina Kickoff Clash to play on their home field. Unfortunately they will face a tough team in the SCISA division, a tough test for a team in its second year of 11-man football. … Dillon Christian 28, CAMB 14.
