Week 10 Football Picks: NMB-MB rivalry shows signs of life

The Myrtle Beach-North Myrtle Beach football rivalry hasn’t meant much lately.

The Seahawks have used it as a tune-up for the playoffs, while the Chiefs have seen it as one last painful game to end the season. The last time they met, Myrtle Beach had wrapped up its sixth straight region title while North Myrtle Beach extended its losing streak to 22.

Things have changed over the past year, with Myrtle Beach (9-1) down a bit and North Myrtle Beach (4-5) up a lot. The Chiefs have lost four straight but finally have the firepower to at least make it a game against the Seahawks, who are second in the region this season.

Myrtle Beach is still a heavy favorite, but the Seahawks may be in for a bit of a surprise if they take the Chiefs too lightly. North Myrtle Beach’s defense is capable of matching up with the athletics Seahawks, whose passing game has struggled a bit lately.

The forecast calls for heavy winds from Hurricane Sandy, which might further hinder Myrtle Beach’s aerial attack. If heavy rains from the storm arrive during the game, the Chiefs could get the ugly slugfest they need to beat Myrtle Beach. Too bad artificial turf doesn’t turn into artificial mud. … Myrtle Beach 27, North Myrtle Beach 13.

* Socastee at St. James: The Braves (9-0) have already wrapped up the region crown, but that shouldn’t drop their guard against the rival Sharks. St. James (3-6) is vying for a playoff spot but its defense will have a tough time stopping Hunter Renfrow & Company from chewing up more yardage than the team bus traveled down Highway 707. … Socastee 35, St. James 20.

* Sumter at Conway: The Tigers (4-5) are still aching from last week’s overtime loss by a half a blade of grass and they take it out on the Gamecocks (4-5) in the Backyard. With the region title still on the line, Conway moves to the front of the line. … Conway 41, Sumter 28.

* Carolina Forest at West Florence: Basketball season is only a few weeks away for the Panthers (1-8), who are still mathematically alive for a playoff berth but certainly don’t appear in position to take advantage. … West Florence 44, Carolina Forest 24.

Last week: 4-1; Overall 23-11
