Week 10 Previews & Picks: Chiefs, Sharks focus on Ws

mbfoot-brownThe Region 7-3A playoff tiebreaker is very complex. But for local teams St. James and North Myrtle Beach – two of four teams tied for second place – it’s really very simple: Win and they’re in, lose and it doesn’t look good.

With three playoff bids up for grabs, the Sharks (5-4, 2-2) and Chiefs (5-4, 2-2) can punch their playoff tickets tonight by winning their regular-season finales. St. James can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win at also 2-2 Lake City, and could sneak in as the No. 4 seed if they and the Chiefs both lose. As the old saying goes, just win, baby. … St. James 24, Lake City 14.

North Myrtle Beach needs to knock off No. 9-ranked and region champion Myrtle Beach for the second straight season to make the playoffs, but even then the Chiefs could land anywhere from the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game to a No. 4 seed and a trip to top-ranked Hartsville in the first round. They could face the same fate with a loss and wins by St. James and Georgetown. … Myrtle Beach 21, North Myrtle Beach 17.

* Conway at Sumter: The Tigers (8-1, 3-0) have already secured a Region 6-4A playoff bid but this first-place showdown will determine the No. 1 seed. A loss could set up a huge showdown with rival Carolina Forest in Week 11.

Conway will be without star receiver Bryan Edwards the rest of the way but quarterback Peyton Derrick still has a stable of targets at wideout, a strong running game behind Jah’Martin and the offensive line, and a sturdy defense to make a deep run. … Conway 23, Sumter 20.

* West Florence at Carolina Forest: The Panthers (4-5, 1-2) need a win over the Knights to keep their playoff hopes alive and write a happy ending to their turnaround season. They can’t afford to look ahead to the season finale at Conway. … Carolina Forest 34, West Florence 13.

* Socastee at South Florence: The Braves (2-7, 1-2) try to keep their momentum going after last week’s impressive victory at West Florence, and they are starting to get healthy just in time for a strong finish. But the Bruins have too much firepower. … South Florence 30, Socastee 17.

Last week: 3-2, Overall 35-14
