Week 10 Previews & Picks: No place like home for CF

confoot-6Forgive the Carolina Forest football team if they instinctively hop on the bus before tonight’s home contest against rival Conway. In what was supposed to be the final game of the regular season, the Panthers are playing only their second home game all year.

How can it be? Carolina Forest’s schedule was intensive on road games to start the season, playing five of their first six on the road. Then Hurricane Matthew came through and postponed a two-game home swing, sending them on the road again last week against West Florence. The Panthers (7-1, 2-0) rallied from 16-7 deficit in the second half to continue their road warrior winning ways.

Conway wasn’t as fortunate at home against Sumter, losing a wild 38-31 triple-overtime shootout. The Tigers (3-4, 1-1) need a region win to help their playoff hopes but that will be a tall task against the Panthers. This should be a great QB showdown between Conway’s Peyton Derrick and Carolina Forest’s Matt Beale, but defense will decide this one. … Carolina Forest 27, Conway 21.

* Wilson at Myrtle Beach: The No. 2 Seahawks (7-0, 1-0) haven’t played in nearly a month when they won a key region opener over rival North Myrtle Beach on Sept. 30, so expect a little bit of rust when they roll out the welcome mat for Wilson. But Myrtle Beach is eager to get back in action and should be back in midseason form in time to handle the Tigers. … Myrtle Beach 38, Wilson 17.

* North Myrtle Beach at St. James: The Chiefs (7-1, 1-1) got a surprisingly strong start from third-string QB Cason McClendon in last week’s 35-14 victory over Marlboro County, but, if he’s ready, they’ll welcome back starter Ronnie Bass Jr. against host St. James. The Sharks (0-8) continue to struggle in search of their first win of the season, and the Chiefs are the wrong team to provide it. … North Myrtle Beach 31, St. James 14.

* Socastee at Sumter: A bad bounce proved costly in the Braves’ wild 47-44 loss to South Florence last week, and such tough losses are starting to mount. Socastee (2-6, 0-2) faces a tough test at Sumter this week and the Gamecocks are on a roll. … Sumter 34, Socastee 17.

Last week: 3-2. Overall: 31-10
