Week 2 Previews & Picks: Local teams get early start

mb-22runnewhanoverWeek 2 comes 24 hours early, courtesy of Tropical Storm Hermine, which plans to vacation on the Grand Strand on Friday. The forecast of heavy rains and high winds forced local teams to move up this week’s games to Thursday night.

That’s good news for Conway, which gets to hit the field a day early with a chance to remove the bad taste left in the Tigers’ mouth by last week’s 36-29 loss to Wando. The Tigers led by two touchdowns at halftime before letting a 2-0 start slip away in the second. This time they catch Class 4A Wilson in The Backyard with an opportunity to erase those bad memories. … Conway 34, Wilson 17.

* Carolina Forest at St. James: The Panthers were impressive in last week’s opening win over Fairmont (NC), and they should be able to handle the struggling Sharks. St. James suffered back-to-back tough losses to start the season and will have a hard time stopping the talented cast of offensive players for the Panthers. … Carolina Forest 41, St. James 14.

* Myrtle Beach at West Florence: The Seahawks have surprised some skeptics who thought they needed time before they were ready to hang with opening foes Byrnes and New Hanover. After a pair of three-touchdown victories, folks are starting to wonder how good this young team can be. They prove they are ready for prime time against the Knights. … Myrtle Beach 27, West Florence 13.

* West Brunswick (NC) at North Myrtle Beach: The Chiefs have been the other pleasant surprise so far this season, and the border rival Trojans provide the perfect foe for them to flex some more muscle. After dispatching Timberland and Loris in Weeks 0 and 1, the Chiefs improve to 3-0 with a big win over the Trojans. … North Myrtle Beach 35, West Brunswick 14.

Last week 5-2; overall 8-4
