Week 4 Preview and Picks: High-scoring games on tap

Good thing Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium’s Jumbotron comes with an equally high-tech scoreboard because a lesser model might blow a fuse when Myrtle Beach welcomes Carolina Forest on Friday night.

Despite their slow starts to the season, both the Seahawks (1-2) and Panthers (0-4) have talented offenses capable of lighting up the scoreboard. And both have equally problematic defenses that may be in for another long night.

Myrtle Beach is allowing more than 40 points per game, while Carolina Forest is giving up more than 50. On a forgettable Friday night just three weeks ago, the Seahawks surrendered 64 points to Richmond County (NC) while the Panthers coughed up 62 to Fort Dorchester.

Those are football scores, folks, not basketball, and it should be a high-scoring night for a lot of local teams. But when Brandon Sinclair starts hitting holes and Will Brunson starts hitting open receivers, you’d better get your calculator ready. … Myrtle Beach 52, Carolina Forest 27.

* North Myrtle Beach at Mullins: The undefeated Chiefs are fresh off a bye week and had time to heal up and get hungry for a trip to Mullins to take on the Auctioneers.

The only trouble NMB should have in this one may be the long-term impact of playing a subpar schedule. The Chiefs will easily improve to 4-0 but only one of those wins, Loris, came against top competition. Will it hurt them come region play? … North Myrtle Beach 38, Mullins 13.

* Lake View at Socastee: See above comments. The Braves have no business playing a winless Class A squad and will make quick work of the Wild Gators to get to 5-0. … Socastee 55, Lake View 12.

* St. James at Cross: This one was a shootout last season, with Cross taking a 53-40 decision before going on to win the Class A-II title. But these two teams have gone in separate directions this season and the Sharks are hungry to get another win. … St. James 31, Cross 28.

* Conway at Marlboro County: The Tigers have to venture into hostile territory against a bitter rival, but they don’t have the hosses to take it to the Bulldogs this year. Look for some Conway pride to make it a game. … Marlboro County 34, Conway 17.

* Christian Academy at North Myrtle Beach Christian: The Saints celebrate the first win in school history against the also-winless Stallions. … CAMB 44, NMBCA 6.
