Week 4 Previews & Picks: Seahawks seek to settle up

mbfoot-2fumblerecovery (2)Carolina Forest pulled off the upset of the year on the Grand Strand last season by defeating eventual Class 3A state champion Myrtle Beach 41-35.

The Panthers scored three unanswered touchdowns to stun the Seahawks and account for the Forest’s lone win of the year. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach went on to win 10 of its last 11 games en route to the state title.

A lot has changed over the past year, but nothing more significant than standout wide receiver Kyle Belack’s transfer from Carolina Forest to Myrtle Beach. He torched the Seahawks last year, and very well may do the same to his old team this time.

But the Panthers, under the direction of first-year coach Marc Morris, have put together back-to-back impressive wins and may be turning the corner just in time to take on the undefeated Seahawks.

This rivalry could be the local game of the year again this season, although it will have to be a real barn burner to top Myrtle Beach’s dramatic 23-22 victory over Socastee last week. Look for the Seahawks to exact some payback from last year’s loss. … Myrtle Beach 31, Carolina Forest 20.

* North Myrtle Beach at Socastee: The Braves are coming off their first regular-season loss since 2011 when their last-second field goal fell just short and wide against Myrtle Beach. Socastee isn’t about to start a losing streak in its place when the Chiefs visit The Reservation.

North Myrtle Beach’s 1-3 start is largely the byproduct of a tougher non-region schedule and an error-prone offense that piles up yards but not points. Socastee has had a problem with putting the ball on the ground too but should be able to hold off the Chiefs. … Socastee 23, North Myrtle Beach 20.

* Marlboro County at Conway: The Tigers are still looking for their first win of the season, but the Bulldogs may not be the best candidates. Despite a 1-2 start, Marlboro County’s losses came against NC state powers Richmond and Scotland County so it is battle-tested and hungry to get back to .500. The Tigers need to step it up or they could be in for a long season. … Marlboro County 21, Conway 14.

* Hannah Pamplico at St. James: The Sharks are coming off a much-needed bye week to recover from the Carolina Forest truck that ran over them two weeks ago, 49-7. St. James can right the ship with a win over the visiting Red Raiders. … St. James 27, H-P 13.

* Robert E. Lee Academy at Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach: The Saints are still getting used to this 11-man football thing, but they haven’t quite reached the level of the Cavaliers. … Lee Academy 28, CAMB 14.
