Week 6 Previews & Picks: Sharks, Braves try to reply

The Battle of the Victory Bell rings into action one day early as a part of WPDE’s “Thursday Night Lights” series, featuring Conway at Myrtle Beach at 7 p.m. on WWMB CW 21. Following last year’s sloppy slugfest at The Backyard in Conway, which saw the Seahawks escape with a 13-8 win, the Tigers are ready to take the hardware back home with them over the Highway 501 bridge.

On paper this looks like a lopsided affair, with Conway coming in undefeated at 4-0 and ranked No. 5 in Class 5A and Myrtle Beach in the midst of a disappointing 2-3 start to the season. But the Seahawks are coming off a surprising 35-14 victory over Carolina Forest and might finally be finding their footing. But the Tigers are talented, had a week off to prepare, and they’re hungry to ring the bell. … Conway 34, Myrtle Beach 20.

* St. James at Socastee: The Braves (3-1) are still picking up the pieces from last week’s 41-7 shellacking at the hands of North Myrtle Beach, but the Sharks (2-3) are still reeling after letting one slip away in a 26-23 loss to Georgetown. This year’s installment of the Battle of Highway 707 rivalry should be another hard-fought one, but look for the Braves to bounce back. … Socastee 31, St. James 27.

* Carolina Forest at Loris: The Panthers (2-2) need a strong performance to shake off their back-to-back losses, and the Class 3A Lions provide the perfect chance to flex some muscle and get back on the winning track. … Carolina Forest 34, Loris 17.

* Camden at North Myrtle Beach: The only way the Chiefs (5-0) can lose this one is if they beat themselves. After turning in a complete game last week in a 41-7 bashing of Socastee, the No. 2-ranked Chiefs have to show they can handle success against the Bulldogs – and they will. … North Myrtle Beach 42, Camden 12.

* Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach at Williamsburg Academy: The Saints played the wildest game in program history in last week’s 57-56 overtime victory over Florence Christian Academy. The Saints (2-2) should carry that added confidence with them on the road. … Christian Academy 38, Williamsburg Academy 17.

* Western Illinois at Coastal Carolina: The Chants (1-1) ran out of time before they started putting it together in last week’s 30-23 loss to UAB. The Leathernecks (2-1) present another tough challenge but the Chants get it done at home. … CCU 27, Western Illinois 23.

* Boston College at Clemson: The Tigers take care of business against the Eagles. … Clemson 41, BC 16.

* Louisiana Tech at South Carolina: The Gamecocks need to be on upset alert this weekend. … USC 24, LT 20.

Last week 3-4, overall 19-11
