Week 7 Picks: Socastee-MB showdown should come down to wire

All signs point to a shootout in Friday night’s battle of the unbeatens between the high-flying Seahawks and ground-pounding Braves.

The two teams are averaging a combined 88 points per game so expect the Jumbotron at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium to get a workout. So will the defenses that face the daunting task of trying to dismantle the opposing scoring machines.

But while all the focus has been on the offensive side of the ball, this one will come down to which defense can do the best job of stopping (or at least slowing) the offense.

In the end, I like Myrtle Beach’s ability to stuff the option better than the Braves’ odds of halting the Seahawks’ aerial attack. … Myrtle Beach 38, Socastee 34.

* Georgetown at North Myrtle Beach: Both teams’ top running backs are banged up, but Delonzo Williams may be ready to get back on track after sitting out last week’s loss at Socastee.

The Chiefs may need him to get past the Bulldogs’ stingy defense. The Chiefs have extra motivation since a fifth win will result in several coaches and boosters getting their heads shaved. … North Myrtle Beach 19, Georgetown 13.

* Wilson at St. James: The Sharks have been victimized by some bad breaks and their own mistakes over the past month but they hope to turn things around against the also-struggling Tigers.

Taking care of the football will cure a lot of what is ailing the Sharks. If they can eliminate the turnovers, they should get their first region victory. … St. James 23, Wilson 20.

* Carolina Forest at Goose Creek: After a bye week to recover, the Panthers get right back into the thick of their tough schedule with a trip to No. 2 Goose Creek.

The Gators have been dismantling opponents this season the same way Carolina Forest has been losing them – strong defense and a mistake-free offense. It’s all too much for the Panthers to overcome. … Goose Creek 49, Carolina Forest 14.

* Conway at West Florence: After finally getting a break from their tough schedule, the Tigers jump right back into the frying pan against the Knights.

This should be a shootout between Conway’s Mykal Moody and South Florence’s potent offensive attack. Watch out for another heart-breaking loss for the Tigers. … West Florence 35, Conway 34.

Last week 4-0. Overall 23-6.
