Week 7 Previews & Picks: Braves run into new region

Socastee HS defeats Southeast Raleigh Magnet HS 22 to 12Region 6-4A play kicks off Friday night with a pair of local rivals renewing league ties. Socastee steps up in class from Region 7-3A, where it won back-to-back titles.

The Braves (5-1) could find tougher sledding in higher class, especially after barely surviving brushes with ex-region foes North Myrtle Beach and St. James the past two weeks. Socastee needed last-minute scores to stave off losses to teams that are a combined 3-9.

Carolina Forest’s two wins came against those same teams, winning by a combined score of 83-28. But the Panthers (2-4) have had trouble staying on the same field with the rest of their schedule, and may have similar issues if they can’t stop the Braves’ triple-option attack. … Socastee 31, Carolina Forest 27.

* Conway at West Florence: The Tigers (1-5) are off to a slow start but appear to be righting the ship just in time for the region opener. Conway knocked off Marlboro County and put up a fight with Myrtle Beach, so the Tigers can turn the corner against Knights. … Conway 24, West Florence 17.

* Lake City at Myrtle Beach: The Seahawks (6-0) finally played like the No. 1 team in Class 3A in last week’s washout at Wilson, and they can establish themselves as the region frontrunner against the Panthers (5-1), who defeated North Myrtle Beach last week. Look for the Seahawks to hit their stride. … Myrtle Beach 41, Lake City 14.

* Georgetown at North Myrtle Beach: The Chiefs (1-5) just can’t seem to cut out the mistakes that are the difference between winning and losing. Fumbles, untimely penalties and interceptions have cost them dearly in recent losses, and the Bulldogs (5-1) are playing solid football. … Georgetown 21, North Myrtle Beach 17.

* Wilson at St. James: The Sharks (2-4) lost their second straight heartbreaker last week at Georgetown so getting over the hump against the Tigers could be as  much mental as physical. Expect S. James to get over the mental hump … St. James 17, Wilson 14.

* Christian Academy at Hilton Head Academy: The Saints face a tough road trip to the Lowcountry. … Hilton Head Academy 34, CAMB 17.
