Week 8 Football Picks: Braves, Bulldogs battle for region lead

The Region 7-3A championship could be decided tonight when undefeated Socastee (7-0 overall, 2-0 region) hosts fellow region-unbeaten Georgetown.

The Braves are normally looking forward to basketball season about this time of year, but now they have to refocus after last week’s impressive victory over No. 1 Myrtle Beach. It would be a shame to let this one slip away after slaying the beast of the region last week.

Learning to handle success is almost as hard as learning to have success, which I’m sure the Braves have heard preached a million time since celebrating last Friday night. This isn’t your father’s Socastee, and these Braves mean business against the Bulldogs. … Socastee 42, Georgetown 20.

* Myrtle Beach at St. James: The Seahawks are still reeling from last week’s loss that snapped their 20-game region winning streak and may end their string of consecutive region titles at five. After beating five Class 4A teams to start the season, who would have thought the rival Braves would be the team to stop Myrtle Beach?

The Sharks (2-5, 1-1) snapped a four-game losing streak last week with a win over Wilson and may be getting healthy just in time to make a run at one of the four playoff spots. But they picked a bad week to catch the Seahawks (6-1, 1-1) in a bad mood. … Myrtle Beach 45, St. James 14.

* North Myrtle Beach at Wilson: Tonight could be the night that the Chiefs (4-3, 0-2) not only secure a .500 record for the season, but also the game that prompts about 20 loyal followers to shave their heads.

The Chiefs will take motivation wherever they can get it against the Tigers (2-5, 0-2), who are coming off a big loss to St. James. After snapping a 22-game losing streak to start the season, a fifth win is cause for celebration – and a haircut. … North Myrtle Beach 27, Wilson 17.

* West Ashley at Conway: Tigers coach Chuck Jordan has been waiting for his team to turn the corner this season, and it may have happened about halftime of last week’s win over West Florence.

The Tigers (3-4, 1-0) trailed 14-0 right out of the gate, but Mykal Moody led the Tigers to a string of 35 unanswered points to win their region opener. They should have enough momentum to manhandle West Ashley and make a run at the region title. … Conway 42, West Ashley 14.

* South Florence at Carolina Forest: The Panthers (1-6, 0-1) ran into a buzzsaw at Goose Creek last week and need to rally the troops to make a respectable showing in the region.

But the Bruins are a prime example of just how tough Region 6-4A is this season. The Panthers defense needs to come up with a big game to get the team back on track. … South Florence 34, Carolina Forest 20.

Last week 2-3; Overall 25-9

Hey terry I would like to nominate Madison Tilford, freshman XC MBHS for one of your Mammy’s athlete of the week slots. After winning the meet last week against Georgetown, she capped it off by winning today’s Horry County XC Championship! Further she is an honor roll student that studies at the Scholars Academy! This is her very first time running! So proud of her!
