Wheeler ties for third, CCU falls to eighth at Seminole

ccugolf-wheelerkneelingCoastal Carolina junior Ben Wheeler carded a 3-under par 213 (70-70-73) to tie for third, while the Chanticleers posted a 54-hole score of 885 to finish eighth at Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7,1172-yard Southwood Golf Course.

Wheeler, who tied for sixth at the event last year, posted his best score in relation to par this season (3-under), while his three-round score of 213 is his second-best effort of the season. He tied for the tournament lead with 14 birdies and he ranked second in the field by shooting 1-under par on the par 3’s.

Wheeler had six birdies on a seven-hole span (holes 9-16) in the morning session before settling for a 2-under 70. In the final round Saturday afternoon, Wheeler closed with a pair of birdies before taking a bogey on his final hole to card a 73.

With Wheeler’s 70 in the second round, he has shot par or better 11 times this season in 27 tries and he helped Coastal shoot an even par 288, marking the second time the Chants has accomplished the feat this season.

Mercer, ranked 34th nationally, won the event with an 8-under par 856. Host and 13th ranked Florida State tied #29 South Florida for runner-up honors, each shooting 862.

Olle Widegren tied for 21st with a 3-over 219 (74-71-74). In round two, the freshman had his first round under par, shooting a 1-under par 71, for the first time since shooting a 69 in the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Oct. 11. Widegren was 3-over par after nine holes but posted four straight birdies on his final four holes to record his 71.

Andrew Dorn tied for 33rd. The junior had rounds of 75-73-75 for a 54-hole total of 223. Roberto Ballesteros tied for 64th (76-78-80=234) and Chris Williams tied for 66th (78-74-84=236). Alfredo Ruiz placed 59th (76-76-80=232) playing as an individual.

Coastal Carolina will return to action April 5-6 at the Insperity GRU Augusta Invitational.
