Winston-Salem silences Pelicans to extend division lead

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced Affiliate of the Texas Rangers, were beaten 6-1 by the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday night at BB&T Field.

Starter Nick McBride held the Dash close until the seventh then the Dash broke the game open with four runs. The Dash now has a four game second half division lead.

Dash Starter Stephen McCray held the birds scoreless for the first five and two thirds of the game when he was lifted for reliever Kevin Vance. The Pelicans threatened heavily in the inning due to a double, two walks and a wild pitch but Vance was able to strikeout Vinny DiFazio to end the threat.

The Dash started the scoring in the fourth and fifth on Mike Blanke and Keenyn Walker RBI singles. Myrtle Beach was able to add one in the top of the seventh to make the game 2-1. Pitcher Kevin Vance threw away a Santiago Chirino ground ball allowing Jhonny Gomez, who singled in the previous at-bat,  to score the Pelicans only run of the game.

Pelicans starter Nick McBride threw the ball very well until the sixth when the potent Dash lineup put up four runs on the board. RBI singles by David Herbek and Walker chased McBride and then league batting leader Dan Black hit a two run homerun off of reliever Phil Klein. Taylor Thompson was able to hold the Pelicans scoreless with two perfect frames in the eighth and ninth. Myrtle Beach Reliever Jon Edwards pitched a scoreless eighth for the Birds.  Jhonny Gomez and Santiago Chirino each had two hits for the Pelicans and Hanser Alberto hit his eleventh double since his call-up from Hickory.

Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem face off in the final game of the three game series on Sunday. It will be the final regular season meeting between the two division rivals. Kyle Devore will take the mound for Myrtle Beach and will face Scott Snodgress, a midseason callup. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
