Witten, May make all-tourney team; Matthews named MVP

Coastal Carolina first baseman Rich Witten and outfielder Jacob May were named to the NCAA Columbia Regional All-Tournament Team on Sunday.

Seven Gamecocks dominated the squad, led by tournament MVP Adam Matthews. Chase Vargeson, LB Dantzler, Joey Pankake and Conway product Colby Holmes also earned all-tourney honors.

Clemson’s Spencer Kieboom, Brad Felder and Phil Pohl rounded out the all-Palmetto State squad, with Manhattan getting shut out for awards.

Witten, also named to the 2012 Big South Championship All-Tournament Team, had a team-best four RBI in the Chanticleers’ three games and batted .273 (3-fof-11). The Danville, Ky., native went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Coastal’s 11-1 win over Manhattan. In the sixth inning and the game tied, Witten hit a sacrifice fly to give the Chants a 2-1 lead. With that RBI, Witten ended the season with a team-best 10 game-winning RBI this season. In Sunday’s game versus Clemson, Witten hit his 50th career double, ending his career seventh on the CCU career list. He also had 158 career RBI to rank sixth all-time in CCU history.

May led Coastal during the Regional with a .583 batting average (7-for-12) and tied for the team lead with four runs scored. He also drove in three, posted a .917 slugging percentage, had a .643 on-base percentage and was 2-for-2 on stole base attempts. May was 2-for-4 with a walk and run scored in the first Clemson game. In the win over Manhattan, he had a bunt single, setting up the Chants first run. In the sixth inning, he had a leadoff single and scored what proved to be the game-winning run. The next inning, May blew open the contest with a three-run home run. In the eighth, he was hit by a pitch and scored. In the final game, he was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Witten was also named to the 2010 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional All-Tournament Team. That year, he hit a grand slam in the title game and, in the 10th inning, doubled before scoring what proved to be the winning run. However, prior to that double, be helped send the game to extra innings by making an impressive stretch at first base to record the final out of the inning.
