Woodall’s walk-off homer lifts Chants past Jaguars

ccubase-woodallgreenCoastal Carolina junior Kevin Woodall Jr., deposited an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence in the 10th inning to lead the 26th-ranked Chanticleers to a 4-3 win at South Alabama in the series opener Thursday night.

Coastal Carolina takes a half-game lead in the Sun Belt East Division with the win, improving to 21-12-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the league. South Alabama falls to 20-14, 9-4. Game two of the series is set for 5:30 pm Friday.

Woodall, who was 0-for-4 prior to his at bat in the 10th, hit his league-leading 13th home run of the season. The Chants threatened for more in the 10th, but USA pitcher Matt Peacock (0-2) made a nice play on a squeeze bunt, scooping the ball to the catcher with his glove to get the out at home.

In the bottom of the 10th, Bobby Holmes (2-2) got a fly out and strikeout before allowing a walk. The junior bounced back by striking out the final batter to secure the win. Holmes worked the final 2.2 innings to get the win. He allowed one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.

Wood Myers was 4-for-5 with two doubles while Billy Cooke, Peyton Isaacson and Matt Beaid each contributed two hits. Alex Cunningham continued to impress as he scattered five hits over seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts.

Three of the five hits the Jaguars collected were in the second inning that led to all three USA runs. Travis Swaggerty hit a leadoff single, stole second, took third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carter Perkins. With two outs, Will Luft singled and Jared Barnes walked to set-up Hunter Stokes’ two-run double.

Like the Jags, Coastal scored its first run thanks to a sacrifice fly. Isaacson drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a Myers’ double. Kieton Rivers followed with a sac fly to score Isaacson. Then, like the Jags, Coastal scored two more in the frame to tie the contest at 3-3. Seth Lancaster followed Rivers’ sac fly with an RBI triple that bought Myers home. Beaird then guided a 1-2 pitch through the left side of the infield to dive in Lancaster and tie the game.

South Alabama put a runner on third in the fifth and seventh innings. However, Cunningham stuck out Swaggerty, the league’s leading hitter, to escape the fifth and got a pop out to end the seventh.

Coastal also wasted a couple of opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings.

While the Chanticleers out-hit the Jaguars, 13-6, US pitchers combined to record 14 strikeouts versus just two walks.
