Wrestling: MB’s Desjardins finishes runner-up in state

mbwrestle-desjardinsMyrtle Beach High senior Stephen Desjardins closed out his high school wrestling career the way he had always dreamed – on the center mat at the SCHSL Individual State Wrestling Championships with a chance to go out on top.

Unfortunately, Desjardins’ crowning moment fell one win short in a 10-4 loss to David Maholtz in the 182-pound championship match. Desjardins’s state runner-up showing was their best among the 15 qualifying wrestlers from the Grand Strand.

Desjardins was masterful from the start, pinning Christian Mills of Blue Ridge in the second round before falling the top-ranked wrestler in Class 4A, Jabbari Dunbar of Richland-Northeast, 30 seconds into the third round. But he was unable to pin Maholtz and finished his senior campaign with a 29-7 overall record.

North Myrtle Beach had the biggest day among local teams, with four of the five Chiefs who qualified reaching the consolation finals. Heavyweight Kwame Livingston scored a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Nick Harper of Cane Bay to capture third place, and teammates Brennan Michael (145), Rahsaan Vereen (152) and Curtis Wolfe (170) finished in fourth place.

All three of Michael’s matches were decided by three-point decisions, and Vereen split a pair of one-point decisions. Wolfe’s day started and ended with a narrow loss to Westwood’s Brice Harkness. Wolfe lost an 8-6 decision in the opener but won back-to-back matches, including a pin of St. James’ Will Stewart, to get another shot at Harkness in the consolation final. Harkness claimed a 5-3 decision in the rematch, but the sophomore Wolfe is one to watch in the future.

In Class 5A, Carolina Forest’s four qualifiers came out on the short end of some close decisions to sideline their quest for the finals. The Panthers’ 152-pound John Winzenried suffered a 5-4 loss in the opening round but wrestled his way back into contention for the consolation finals before an injury forced him to forfeit his third match of the day.
