5A Roundup: Panthers roll; Braves rally; Tigers tumble

socfoot-9hitAs the only team to take a bye week last Friday, the Carolina Forest football team was chomping at the bit to get the season started. The Panthers made up for lost time by blowing out host Fairmont (NC) 48-16 on Friday night.

Carolina Forest QB Matt Beale threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and running back Dyverse Simmons ran for two scores as the Panthers jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and were never threatened.

Nasier Nesmith, Jordan Ferrell and Anthony McAfee scored second-half TDs for the Panthers (1-0).

Carolina Forest travels to St. James next Friday.

* Wando 36, Conway 29: The Tigers blew a two-touchdown lead in the second half to suffer a tough loss to the visiting Warriors. Conway quarterback Peyton Derrick was intercepted on the final drive of the game to end the Tigers’ tying hopes.

The game turned out to be a showdown of dueling star running backs as Conway’s Daiquawn Clark ran for two TDs in the first half and Derrick completed a short TD pass to Malachi Miller to give the Tigers (1-1) a 22-8 halftime advantage.

But Wando’s Dakairee Alston stole the show, scoring a pair of TDs and a 2-point conversion in the third quarter to even the score at 22-all, and his third TD run early in the fourth gave Wando its first lead since an early 8-7 edge.

Conway’s Clark answered with an 11-yard score and his third rushing TD to tie it at 29-all, but Alston got the last word with his game-winning fourth TD run with 2:42 remaining. Derrick’s pick allowed the Warriors (1-1) to run out the clock.

Conway plays host to Wilson on Friday.

* Socastee 44, North Brunswick (NC) 40: The Braves scored the game’s final two touchdowns in the final 7 minutes to rally to victory in their home opener.

In a see-saw battle that left the Braves (1-1) trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter, 40-30, Socastee scored on their final two possessions to earn their first win of the season.

Socastee used a long pass to set up the TD that cut the deficit to 40-37, and the Braves got the ball back on a turnover to set up the winning score. Dashaun Myers broke free for a 14-yard D run that put the Braves on top, and the defense picked off a late pass to clinch the win.
