Reports: Golson kicked out for academic dishonesty

One day after the news broke that he was no longer enrolled at Notre Dame, multiple reports began to surface Sunday that former Myrtle Beach High and Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson was suspended from the university for cheating on a final exam.

Golson also released a  statement Sunday that seemed to support the claims, saying he used “poor academic judgment” – a curious choice of words if the suspension had been based on grades alone. There was no indication if the violation was plagiarism or some other form of academic dishonesty.

However, while he will not play in 2013, Golson says he is planning on returning to Notre Dame in the winter and playing for the Fighting Irish in 2014.

In a statement released by the school Sunday, Golson took full responsibility for making “poor choices” and using “poor academic judgment” in earning the one-semester suspension. He vowed to “regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community.”

“My parents and the community I grew up in have instilled values in me that have and will continue to allow me to be successful in the future,” he said in the statement “There have been many lessons learned as I worked to become the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and each was a result of Coach (Brian) Kelly’s belief in me as an athlete and a person.

“At this point, I understand how my integrity could be in question but I want to reassure my supporters that through this experience I will return a better student athlete as well as a better individual.

“Lastly, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for the opportunity already granted and also the opportunity going forth to regain my eligibility in the winter of 2014.”

Notre Dame confirmed the suspension but cited federal law and school privacy policies for not revealing the reason for the move. The school did indicate it was a “Student Life” violation.

The Chicago Tribune  and ESPN.com were among the outlets to report the suspension was based on unspecified “academic violations.” Golson was an honors student at Myrtle Beach High.

Golson started 11 games last season while leading the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season and a bid to the BCS title game in Miami, where they were blown out by Alabama. He completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
