Rocky Mountain Low: CCU golfers go low in Colorado

The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s golf teams made strong showings in Colorado on Monday, with the Chanticleers finishing seventh in the 18-team Air Force Academy tournament and the Lady Chants sharing second place after the first round of the GolfWeek Conference Challenge.

Three Chants shot under par on Monday and Coastal Carolina moved up three spots to finish in seventh in the Air Force’s Gen Miranda Falcon Invitational, played at the 7,363-yard, par 72 Eisenhower Golf Club.

Coastal Carolina’s 1-under par 287 was the fourth-lowest round on Monday to finish the 54-hole event at 7-over par 871 (296-288-287). UNLV and Colorado were tied for the team lead after 54 holes with the Runnin’ Rebels winning in a playoff at the Colorado Springs, Colo., course.

Sebastian Soderberg led Coastal, placing 12th. The junior carded a two-under 70 Monday and finished the event at three-under par 213 (75-68-70). Sophomore Roberto Ballesteros posted a career-low, one-under 215 (67-72-76).

Senior Charlie Winegardner and freshman Ben Wheeler  each shot 71. Winegarder, after an opening-round 77, rallied to shoot 72-71 and finished at four-over par 220 (35th-tied). Wheeler’s 71 came after rounds of 77-76 and tied for 56th with a three-round score of 224.

The Chanticleers return to action Oct. 1-2 at Duke’s Rod Myers Invitational.

The Lady Chants were led by Kaitlin Higginbotham, who fired an opening round 3-under 69 to tie for the lead at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colo.

The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team posted a 9-over 297 putting them in a tie for second with Oregon. They are three back of tournament leader UC Davis.

Starting on the back nine, Jessica Alexander shot a three-under 33 opening nine but a late double bogey pulled her back to even for the day, putting her in four-way tie for sixth. Brittany Henderson carded an opening round 77 followed by Frida Castillo (79) and Courtney Boe (81).

Play continues at noon Tuesday for the 10-team field.
