Abbott shuts out Rebellion to lead Scrapyard Dawgs

softMonica Abbott turned in her fifth shutout of the NPF season Thursday, but needed a little help from her defense in the Scrapyard Dawgs 3-0 win over the Pennsylvania Rebellion at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

With the Dawgs up 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Abbott retired the first two batters and was one out away from an easy shutout before the Rebellion battled back. Whitney Arion and Olivia Watkins both singled before Stacey Porter drew a walk to load the bases. Pinch hitter Kristyn Sandberg followed and hit a hard grounder up the middle. Scrapyard Dawgs shortstop Madison Shipman made a diving stop and flipped from her stomach to second baseman Nerissa Myers to get the force out and seal the shutout for Abbott.

The shutout was Abbott’s league-leading fifth of the year. She struck out nine while walking two, scattering six singles along the way.

The Scrapyard Dawgs got the scoring going early against Pennsylvania starter Dallas Escobedo. Kiki Stokes began the game by singling to left before Breja’e Washington reached on a throwing error by Escobedo. After the runners advanced to second and third, Amanda Fama singled up the middle to score both runs and give the Dawgs a 2-0 lead.

With the score still 2-0 in the top of the third, Stokes singled to left field again. Washington then singled on a ball that was mishandled by the left fielder, allowing the runers to advance to second and third. Two batters later, Shipman hit a ground ball on which Stokes beat the throw to the plate, making the score 3-0. Escobedo was able to strike out the next two batters to avoid further trouble.

Escobedo finished her night with three scoreless frames, allowing only two earned runs on six hits over six innings for the evening. She was able to strike out 12 batters in the process. Emma Johnson worked a perfect seventh for the Rebellion.

The Rebellion and Scrapyard Dawgs will meet again Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
