All-County Girls Soccer: Gordon nets record, POY

Blair Mueller remembers her first day on the job as the Myrtle Beach High girls soccer coach four years ago while she was trying to get a sneak preview of her young team.

Standing unassumingly on the sidelines was a pair of undersized freshmen hoping to join the varsity squad – Tristan Gordon and Josie Posma. They gave Mueller no reason to believe they would become her most potent 1-2 punch.

“I wanted to meet them before everything started, and they both kind of just stood there,” Mueller recalled. “The team wasn’t really moving off the ball or playing well. The older girls told me that the team lost all their goal scorers, so I left that that practice assuming it was going to be a rebuilding year. Little did I know that they were going to be two of the biggest impact players I would have over the next four years.”

Gordon, an all-state selection and two-time Region 7-4A Player of the Year, also earns the honor as the My Horry News All-County Player of the Year. She shattered every goal-scoring record for the Lady Seahawks, and capped her senior season by breaking the all-time goals record for Horry County Schools held by (guess who?) Blair Monroe Mueller.

Mueller, who scored 134 career goals at North Myrtle Beach, watched Gordon chop away at the record before breaking it with a hat trick against (guess who?) North Myrtle Beach in April. She finished with 138 after leading the Lady Seahawks to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs – not exactly how she hoped to finish, but she leaves with great memories.

“It feels great to have a successful high school career. I was so lucky to play with such a great group of girls,” Gordon said. “The record doesn’t necessarily mean more to me now that the season is over but it is a great honor to hold the record and I am so thankful for all the coaches and teammates that helped me along the way.”

That includes Posma, who finished with more than 42 career goals and was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game. She was considered for Player of the Year, along with several members of the SCISA Class 2A runner-up Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach squad.

CAMB’s John Markley is All-County Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Saints and graduating twin daughters Julia and Natalie to four straight state finals.
