All-County Volleyball: NMB duo adds to state-title run

How do you choose between two state championship teammates and senior co-captains for All-County Volleyball Player of the Year honors? In this case, you don’t.

North Myrtle Beach’s Sydney Bellamy and Kayla Henley share the title after co-leading the Lady Chiefs to an impressive march to the Class 4A state crown in November.

“Kayla and Sydney have had a huge impact on volleyball at North Myrtle Beach,” said coach Alex Sing. “They helped me be a better coach and inspired our team to be successful. They have been the ones leading the state championship run and have set a high bar for the others to follow.”

Before the duo hoisted the championship hardware, Bellamy and Henley were often on opposing sides of neighborhood pick-up teams and youth sports leagues. The common thread from young rivals to state title teammates was their fierce competitiveness, which helped drive one another to the top.

“We were neighbors growing up so we’ve been playing all kinds of sports with and against each other since we were kids,” Bellamy said. “We even ran a kids’ triathlon against each other. I think that competitive spirit came out and pushed both of us to get better and helped us win the state championship.”

Bellamy joined Henley on the varsity squad in the eighth grade, and the two have been a key part of transforming North Myrtle Beach into a state title contender. After losing to 2017 state champ and rival Myrtle Beach in last year’s Lower State final, they vowed to take the next step – and did – in 2018.

“It was an amazing feeling after playing five years together on varsity and getting closer and closer to winning it every year,” Bellamy said. “To finally get there and go out as state champions is a huge accomplishment.”

The duo is joined on the all-county first team by junior teammate Raegan Matney. Myrtle Beach’s Gracie Davis and Dakota Hansen, who led the Lady Seahawks to the Lower State finals, and Carolina Forest’s Kaitlin Andresen round out the first squad.

Honorable mention goes to Honorable Mention Anna Walker (Socastee), Atley Livingston (Conway), Rebecca Arteaga (St. James), Emma Morgan (Carolina Forest), Kaelyn Haldi (Christian Academy), Emma Ann Lay (Loris) and Claire Lewis (Aynor).
