Athlete of the Season: MB’s Lewis, Penny top spring list

The people have spoken, and apparently they are fans of Seahawks soccer.

Myrtle Beach boys soccer standout Mason Lewis was the overwhelming selection for the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Spring Sports Season, followed by Lady Seahawk Summer Penny.

The Myrtle Beach duo garnered more than 21,000 of the nearly 25,000 votes cast after having successful seasons for the Seahawks.

Lewis earned weekly honors when he led the Myrtle Beach boys to the championship of the prestigious Airport Invitational. He scored goals in four of the Seahawks’ five victories that weekend.

Penny’s weekly award came after scoring eight goals in three games late in the season, including back-to-back hat tricks against region foes. The Lady Seahawks lost in the second round of the playoffs while the boys reached the third round.

Even better news for the Seahawks, both players are returning next season. Lewis, a rising senior, and Penny, a rising junior, look to lead their teams even farther in the playoffs next year.

That’s not the case for the third and fourth-place finishers in the voting – North Myrtle Beach baseball player Billy Ferguson and Carolina Forest soccer standout Peter Gennaro. The graduates are off to college to take their games to the next level.

Carolina Forest baseball rising junior and fifth-place finisher Ryan Flynn will return to try to help the Panthers reach the playoffs next year. Socastee graduate and sixth-place finisher Charlie Nicholson is off to USC Sumter in the fall.

Myrtle Beach goalkeeper and rising senior Jose Arrendondo placed seventh in the voting, followed by Carolina Forest graduate and softball ace Rachel Lembcke, and Socastee grad and lacrosse goalkeeper Joey Lazaroff.

The voting completes the first school year of the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week and Season awards. Myrtle Beach quarterback Tyler Keane and North Myrtle Beach girls basketball star India Farmer earned the honors for the fall and spring, respectively.
