Athlete of the Week: Rabon adds fuel to Sharks’ attack

sjbase-rabonParker Rabon and his St. James High baseball teammates know that along with wearing the Sharks uniform comes high expectations. Rabon believes this year’s team can live up to the lofty goals that come with playing for a state power.

“I think this is the strongest St. James team I’ve been a part of, and I feel good about our chances when we’re all clicking,” said Rabon, who was named the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week. “I think this is the group to do it. I love this team. There’s no in-team arguments or hating anybody. We get along really well and we play together really well.”

It’s hard to argue given the Sharks play over the last month. St. James had won seven in a row and 10 out of 11 before falling to Class 4A contender West Florence in the semifinals of the Mingo Bay Classic, which saw them defeat out-of-state foes Brockport (NY), Jefferson (WV) and Spanish Fort (AL).

Following a tough 4-3 loss to North Myrtle Beach earlier this week, their first region defeat of the season, the Sharks responded by avenging an earlier loss to No. 2-ranked Carolina Forest. St. James erased two deficits to rally for the 10-8 win over the Panthers to set the stage for a strong stretch run. Rabon went 2-for-4 and drive in four runs in the comeback.

“That was a lot of fun because we knew they were really good team,” Rabon said of the Carolina Forest win. “They have a lot of great players and college commits, and they jumped out to big lead on us. But we battled back and that was a big win for us because it showed what we can do when we’re all working together.”

That could be the key for the Sharks to finish off with the region title and make a deep postseason run. The sophomore first baseman knows the Sharks have the talent to reach those goals; it’s just a matter of putting it all together.

“We have some small holes, but really it’s just a matter of getting everyone on the same page,” Rabon said. “We’ve had games where we’ve blown up defensively and we’ve had games when we don’t get the bats going, but when we’re playing well in all phases there aren’t too many teams that can beat us.”
