Athlete of the Week: Senior Prosser leads Lady Sharks

sjsoft-prosserSt. James High senior Rebecca Prosser’s softball future is secure after signing scholarship papers with USC Upstate.

Now she just wants to enjoy her final weeks of high school, and that means going out with a fifth Region 7-3A championship … and hopefully more.

Prosser and fellow senior Hannah Price were a part of four straight region title teams before rival Socastee broke the streak last season. As the lone seniors on the young squad, they hope to lead the Lady Sharks back to the top and get one for the thumb.

“Hannah and I met playing travel ball and we’ve been best friends since we started playing here together in the seventh grade,” said Prosser, who was voted the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week. “This season is kind of bittersweet since it’s out last time playing together, but we’re trying to lead the team in the right direction and keep the tradition going.”

Prosser does it all for the Lady Sharks, splitting time between the mound and first base, although she can play virtually every position on the diamond. Despite her work on the hill and in the field, Prosser also packs a punch at the plate. Her. 378 batting average is an impressive as her 3.47 ERA.

“Becca is a great leader, a team-first player,” said St. James coach Adam Jones. “She, along with Hannah Price, have been a cornerstone of our success the past five years.”

Prosser has been asked to carry a larger share of the pitching duties this season, and she and her Lady Shark teammates have a tough road and a busy week ahead to scratch the first goal off their to-do list. Due to a rainy spring, St. James has three key region games this week, weather permitting. Then she and her Lady Shark teammates are going to Disney World, not for a premature victory celebration, but to play in a top national tournament at the ESPN Sports complex. They will return for a hectic final week of the regular season before the district tournament begins May 2.

“Playing at Disney is a great experience because there are all these great teams from all over the world there,” Prosser said. “A lot of our younger girls have never been to Disney before so it’s going to be fun, but it’s also great competition and that should get us pumped up for the rest of the season. We just want to go as far as we can go.”
