Athlete of the Week: Truluck adds true skill to Seahawks

mbgtennis-etruluck2Myrtle Beach High freshman Elizabeth Truluck is known all over the state for her impeccable tennis abilities, and for holding the No. 1-ranked player in South Carolina.

Earning the title of Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week is just one component of her rising stardom in tennis. Truluck plays No. 1 singles and doubles for the undefeated Lady Seahawks varsity squad this season and hopes to lead the state powerhouse program back to another Class 3A title. It’s a pressure position for a freshman, but a role she embraces.

“I’m going to try to lead the team to another state championship by playing my best and supporting (my teammates),” said Truluck, who is also undefeated in both singles and doubles so far this season. “I honestly play better under pressure and I’m able to stay calm by trying to be positive and have fun while I’m playing.”

Despite her youth, Truluck manages to keep calm and stay humble during her matches. She focuses on her game and on helping her teammates get better. Truluck has spent countless hours practicing, working on both her technique and strategy to help her continue to win.

“I’ve been playing tennis for about eight years and this is my first year playing for the Seahawks (varsity),” said Truluck, whose older sister, Catherine, is also a teammate. “I enjoy the sport because it’s fun, it takes a lot of focus and I like the competition.”

The Myrtle Beach girls tennis program has a rich history, with 14 state championships to its credit. Truluck considers it an honor to receive the opportunity to wear the Lady Seahawks uniform, as well as her position at No. 1 singles and doubles, when she takes the court.

“Elizabeth has been a great addition to our team this year, and I’ve known her for years as her P.E. coach,” said Myrtle Beach coach Jeri Himmelsbach, whose Lady Seahawks reached the state finals without Truluck last season. “She is very talented and a total team player.

“My entire team is playing all year round and we are focused and determined with our eyes on claiming another state title for the Seahawks, with Truluck being a large component of the team effort.”

With a solid corps of returning players in place and the addition of a young phenom, Truluck could be the perfect match the Lady Seahawks need for another strong season.
