Athlete of Week: Bodge saves best year for last

Myrtle Beach High senior Carly Grace Bodge hoped to have a successful senior season with the Lady Seahawks. One region title, an all-state selection and an invitation to play in the SCCAWS All-Star Game later, it’s safe to say “Mission Accomplished.”

“We came into the season knowing we were better than how we did the past few years and we wanted to change that,” said Bodge, who can add Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week to her lengthy resume. “We worked so well together as a team, everyone did their job, and we started putting it all together.”

Bodge led the Lady Seahawks to the district finals before finishing the season at 17-6. Myrtle Beach coach Meredith Jiorle points to a five-day stretch in mid-March, when the Seahawks defeated rivals St. James 5-2 and Conway 10-7. She also points to Bodge for spearheading that surge both from the mound and at the plate.

“They started to believe they were a great team and could go far this season,” said Jiorle, whose co-captain doubled, homered and racked up six RBIs while also earning the win in relief against the Lady Tigers. “It was a confidence booster … (and) Carly Grace had one of her best games of her career.”

Bodge finished the season with a 1.20 ERA and 60 strikeouts, while also batting .313 with 17 RBIs. She credits her coaches and teammates, particularly longtime battery-mate and all-region catcher McKenzie Coble, for helping her to put an exclamation-mark ending to a stellar high school career.

“McKenzie definitely made me better, not just knowing how to call pitches but also to keep me from getting so stressed out,” Bodge said. “I remember my first year on varsity I would always get upset when people hit off me. That’s why it felt so good to only give up two hits in some games this season. All that experience helped.”

Along with a lot of practice and tenacity. “Carly Grace works extremely hard and is relentless,” Jiorle said. “She is a role model for the underclassmen and is very goal-based, which shows not only on the ball field but in the classroom as well.”

Despite being heavily recruited by smaller schools, Bodge is hanging up her glove for academic pursuits following the all-star game in June. After graduating in the top 10 of her class, she will attend Clemson in the fall to major in nursing.

“It went by so fast,” Bodge said. “I’m going to miss it.”

But not as bad as the Lady Seahawks will miss her impact.
