Athlete of Week: Dupuis’ move pays off on course

nmbgolf-dupuisNorth Myrtle Beach senior golfer Jake Dupuis has made some serious strides up the leaderboard for the Chiefs, but his best move may have come off the course two years ago.

As an aspiring golfer living in his native Ontario, Canada, Dupuis made the difficult decision to leave home and move to the golf capital of the Grand Strand in hopes of improving his game and earning a college scholarship. Missions accomplished.

“I moved here from Canada before my junior year to live with my grandparents,” said Dupuis, who was voted the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week. “I came pretty much for the golf and the warmer weather. It’s cold up there. You could play golf maybe four months out of the year, and two of those it was 50 degrees. Down here you can play year-round and it’s more of a golf atmosphere.”

Following in the more serious footsteps of Happy Gilmore, the former hockey player traded in his stick for clubs as a teenager and showed real promises despite the climate-related challenges. His relocation coincided with a real surge in his swing, and Dupuis earned numerous medalist honors in leading the Chiefs to a third-place tie in the Class 3A state tournament.

“I didn’t play as well as I wanted to the first day, but that’s golf. But we all turned it around and played well the second day to tie for third, which is pretty solid,” said Dupuis, who shot 81-75 for a 156 total. “If we could have shot better in the first round, we could have finished second or even challenged for first. But overall, it was a great way to finish.”

Dupuis actually ended his local career last weekend by helping his team to victory in the North-South All-Star match at Barefoot Resort. Now Dupuis is focused on finishing out the final days before graduation and returning to Canada to see his parents before embarking on the next journey of his career with a college scholarship to Limestone College.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my parents and I’m going to play in some junior tournaments in Canada and New York. I might even play some here if I get back in time before I leave for college,” Dupuis said. “My goal when I moved down here was to get a college scholarship and keep playing and getting better, and I want to keep doing that in the years to come.”
