Athlete of Week: Hix sets Seahawks up for success

mbvol-20For Myrtle Beach High junior setter Danni Hix, volleyball has always been a family affair. That’s why she has no problem sharing credit for her Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week award with both her natural-born relatives and her new teammates.

“I learned a lot about volleyball from both my sister, Tara, and my mom (Dixie). They were my coaches for a while, and they were also setters when they played, so they helped me a lot,” said Hix. “Both of my sisters, Taylor and Tara, played volleyball, and so did my mom, which is what got me started in the sport in the first place.”

While elder sisters Tara and Taylor also played high school and club volleyball locally, Danni has found her own adopted family with this group of Seahawks. In addition to leading Myrtle Beach in assists and helping the team reach last week’s Class 4A state championship game, Hix also brings a sharp focus and a team mindset to the Seahawks, whom she credits for making her a better player.

“Being a setter for Myrtle Beach has been awesome because I get to grow as a player and watch the passers and hitters get better and better the longer we play,” said Hix. “This season I played with some of the best players I have ever played with before. We really meshed as a team this year. It’s so fun to play with people who are always working hard and trying to do their best.”

Playing recreational and club volleyball since the age of 9, Hix’s involvement in the sport has elevated her career, boosted her skill set, and made her an asset to this year’s Seahawks squad. She plans on improving her game in the offseason to prepare for her last season for the Seahawks. With almost the entire starting lineup back from this year’s 34-2-1 squad, Hix hopes to help the team take the next step to a state title.

“I’m playing club volleyball for Grand Strand Juniors and working on setting as much as possible so that I’ll be ready for next season,” Hix said. “I’m excited for next season. I think we have an awesome chance of getting back to states and winning this time. We’ve been there and experienced it all and now we just have to work that much harder to win it all next year.”
