Tide sweeps, Coastal splits Kickin’ Chicken Classic tilts

ccusoft-bamaThe Coastal Carolina softball team fell, 9-3, to seventh-ranked Alabama to close out the annual Kickin’ Chicken Classic. The Chanticleers finished the weekend 3-2 overall.

Amanda Daneker (1-for-3) led the Chanticleers with two RBI and drew on walk as CCU combined for three hits.

Alabama senior Marisa Runyon, a product of Carolina Forest, went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

The Chants got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the third. Kassidy Smith drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch runner Payton Hanson. After a sacrifice bunt, Taty Forbes reached on a fielder’s choice while an error on the play allowed Forbes to take second and put Hanson on third. Two batters later, Daneker pushed a two-out, two-run single up the middle to send Hanson and Forbes to the plate.

Alabama responded with four runs in the fourth to gain a 4-2 lead. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases for the Crimson Tide. Reagan Dykes delivered a RBI single to center field to start things off. Then, a CCU error allowed two more runs to make it 3-2. Later, Demi Turner provided an RBI single to plate Dykes.

The Crimson Tide add four more runs in the fifth as Bailey Hemphill and Sydney Booker each blasted two-run home runs over the centerfield fence.

Gabby Callaway provided the final run for Alabama with a bases-loaded, infield RBI single to increase the lead to 9-2 in the sixth.

Coastal attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Smith and Buccilli both walked and Forbes delivered a single to load the bases with no outs. Alexis Alvino hit a sac fly to send Smith home and make the score, 9-3. However, the Crimson Tide limited the damage by inducing a game-ending double play.

Chanticleer sophomore pitcher Taylor Rahach (1-1) suffered the loss as she allowed eight hits and four runs over 3.0 innings. Devin Wallace worked 1.1 innings and Ashley Guillette pitched the final 2.2 innings to close out the game.
