Baseball: MB rides Bodge’s hot bat, arm to playoff win

mbbase-5pitchMyrtle Beach’s Cameron Bodge may be best known for his pitching, but lately the senior also has been swinging a big stick.

Bodge threw a complete game and hit a pair of three-run homers in Tuesday’s District 7-4A playoff opener to lift the Seahawks to a 12-2 victory over Lakewood at the Ripken Experience. He struck our seven and scattered seven hits over six innings to earn the win, but he did the bulk of his damage with a bat.

Bodge now has four homers in the Seahawks’ last four games. Last week he had another three-run homer and a grand slam, giving him an astounding 13 RBIs on those shots.

Bodge held the Gators scoreless through the first two innings, but after Lakewood took a 2-0 lead in the third and Myrtle Beach promptly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Bodge followed with a three-run homer that proved to be all the offense he needed, but he added even more. His three-run jack in the fifth left no doubt about the outcome.

Myrtle Beach’s Jayce Allen and Lawson Cribb each drove in a pair of runs.

The Seahawks return home Thursday to face the winner of the Chapin-Hilton Head game.

* Darlington 1, North Myrtle Beach 0: The Falcons won a pitchers’ duel in their playoff opener with the Chiefs to advance to the winners bracket of the district tournament.

North Myrtle Beach will host Berkeley in an elimination game Thursday.

* Wando 3, Conway 0: The Tigers were shut out in their playoff opener against the Warriors, sending them into an elimination game Thursday.

Conway travels to Region 6-5A foe West Florence on Thursday.

* West Ashley 5, Carolina Forest 1: The Panthers suffered a first-round playoff loss on the road to fall into the losers’ bracket of the district tournament.

The Panthers will face the loser of the River Bluff-Fort Dorchester game in an elimination matchup Thursday.

* St. James-Hartsville (ppd.): The Sharks’ playoff opener against the Red Foxes was postponed due to poor field conditions in Hartsville following heavy rains. The game is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.
