Baseball: MB routs Wilson; SJ wins tight one at NMB

After being hammered by rivals on back-to-back nights, the Myrtle Beach baseball team took out its frustrations on visiting Wilson on Wednesday.

The Seahawks were battered by a combined score of 30-14 in losses to Carolina Forest on Monday and North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday. They turned the tables on the Tigers, taking an 11-1 decision to stay in the hunt for the region title.

Wilson struck first with one run in the first inning, but the Seahawks scored in each of the first four frames to pull away. Luke Edwards led Myrtle Beach with three hits and four RBIs, and Jackson Thomas (two RBIs) and Davis Goodroe (three RBIs) had two hits apiece.

Myrtle Beach starter Tyler Burgess shook off the slow start to get the complete game, albeit shorted to six frames via the mercy rule. He allowed only five hits, struck out five and allowed only one walk.

* St. James 4, North Myrtle Beach 3: The Sharks jumped back into the thick of the Region 7-4A title chase Wednesday with a victory over the host Chiefs.

The Sharks scored a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to claim the early lead and their pitching made it stand up. Starter Nick Bray scattered six hits over five innings, and Tyler String pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the save. Both pitchers struck out three apiece.

The Chiefs outhit the Sharks 6-3 but couldn’t close the early gap. Cole Gasque came in to relieve Chase Hudson after the shaky start. Gasque allowed only one hit and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings of work, and River Newman pitched a hitless seventh, striking out two to keep the Chiefs’ hopes alive.

Hudson led NMB at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and Colin Cordera went 2 for 3. Trystan Freeman and Anthony Peck had RBI singles for the Sharks.

* West Florence 7, Socastee 0: The Braves were shut out by Coastal Carolina commitment Will Hardee, who struck out 12 to earn a region win on the road.
