Baseball: Seahawks, Tigers survive; Sharks, Chiefs fall

The Myrtle Beach High baseball team managed to avoid elimination Tuesday night with a 9-5 victory over visiting Hanahan at the Ripken Experience. fields

The Seahawks (16-8) erupted for three runs in the first inning to take early control of the game. Myrtle Beach also took advantage of several fielding errors, including a two-run single by Andrew Morris that bounced off the pitcher’s leg and forced an errant throw.

Myrtle Beach starter Jesse Nelson earned the win and reliever Praise Thorsen came on to close out Hanahan. The Seahawks travel to Manning on Wednesday in need of a win to reach the district finals.

* Brookland-Cayce 6, St. James 5: The top-seeded Sharks blew a one-run lead in the seventh inning and then lost the game in the ninth to fall into the loser’s bracket of the C;ass 3A district tournament at the Ripken Experience fields.

But B-C rallied to score the tying run and then plated two runs in the top of the ninth. The Sharks could muster only one run in the bottom of the frame for their first playoff loss.

The Sharks will play host to the loser of Tuesday’s Marlboro County-Hilton Head Island contest at Shark Park on Wednesday. If they win they will need to take two from Hanahan to advance to the Lower State tournament.
