Baseball: Sharks beat WH; Panthers win Border Battle

The St. James baseball team capped a strong showing in the Coastal Invitational Tournament on Sunday with a 7-4 victory over Wade Hampton.

The Sharks used a four-run fourth inning to build a commanding 6-0 lead, but they surrendered four runs (three unearned) in a mistake-filled fifth.

St. James relievers Anthony Critelli and Cameron Dean each pitched one hitless inning each (one strikeout apiece) as Dean earned the save. Starting pitcher Anthony Peck got the win, striking out eight and allowing no hits or walks.

The Sharks only outhit Wade Hampton by a 5-4 margin, with Ethan Salak leading all hitters with two. He also had the Sharks’ lone RBI as three of their seven runs were unearned.

St. James went 3-1 in the tournament, defeating Bamberg-Ehrhardt 9-3 and Cheraw 5-4. The Sharks’ lone loss came to Wando 6-4.

* Wando 8, Socastee 7: The Braves lost an extra-inning heartbreaker in their finale of the CIT, falling in the 10th inning to the Warriors.

Socastee’s Dylan Kuehne led the Braves offense with three RBIs. He also pitched three innings.

* Carolina Forest 7, Charlotte Country Day (NC) 2: The Panthers won the championship game of the Carolina Border Battle on Saturday.

Senior Max Ryerson also had a two-run homer to put the Panthers in the lead in the first inning and they never trailed. Senior T-Jay Brunson drove in a run with a sac fly and so did Senior Aaron Minter with a base hit.

All-Tournament Team members for the Panthers were Dylan Jones, Konnor Walters, Max Ryerson, Jackson Weatherwax and Derek Rogers. The MVP of the Tournament was Chase Hughes.
The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at St. James.
